Kralupy nad Vltavou is situated on both banks of the Vltava River, roughly 20 kilometers north of Prague. First mentioned in 1253 in a deed by King Wenceslaus I, it remained a small agricultural settlement for several centuries. Its rapid transformation into an industrial powerhouse began in 1851 with the opening of the Prague-Dresden railway line. Kralupy quickly evolved into a vital railway junction and a key river port on the Vltava. During the 20th century, the chemical industry and oil refining became the town's economic backbones, maintaining their significance to this day. Near the end of World War II, in March 1945, the town suffered catastrophic damage during Allied air raids targeting its refineries. Today, Kralupy is a modern urban center with advanced infrastructure, benefiting significantly from its proximity to the capital and its strategic importance for national freight transport.
