Trosky Castle Ruins (Czech Republic)

Weather…

The Trosky Castle Ruins are the most iconic landmark of the Bohemian Paradise (Český ráj), perched atop two bizarre basalt volcanic plugs. Founded in the late 14th century by Čeněk of Wartenberg, the fortress utilized the natural defensive advantages of the steep rocks to become almost impregnable. The two distinctive towers are known locally as 'Baba' (the Old Woman), the shorter and broader one, and 'Panna' (the Virgin), the taller and slimmer one. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was abandoned and fell into disrepair, eventually becoming the romantic ruin seen today. Visitors can climb both towers to experience dramatic panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, including the Giant Mountains (Krkonoše) on clear days. The ruins are shrouded in legends of hidden treasures and secret tunnels beneath the volcanic rock. Trosky continues to inspire hikers, photographers, and history enthusiasts with its unique silhouette against the Czech landscape.
