Semily is situated at the confluence of the Jizera and Oleška rivers at the foothills of the Jizera and Giant Mountains. First documented in 1352, the town emerged as a prominent center for the textile industry during the 19th century, a period that fundamentally shaped its modern urban landscape. Industrial growth brought significant wealth to the region, resulting in the construction of numerous factories and elegant bourgeois residences. One of the town's most famous attractions is the Rieger Trail (Riegrova stezka), an impressive hiking path traversing the Jizera river canyon; it is named after the renowned politician František Ladislav Rieger, who was born in Semily. Architectural highlights include the town hall and the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, a Neo-Romanesque structure dating from the early 20th century. Today, Semily serves as a gateway to the Bohemian Paradise Geopark and is a popular starting point for nature enthusiasts. Despite the decline of traditional textile manufacturing, the town continues to function as an important regional administrative center with a focus on culture.
