Mount Říp, standing at 459 meters, is one of the most significant historical and national landmarks in the Czech Republic despite its modest height. This basalt volcanic cone originated in the Tertiary period and rises prominently from the flat Elbe lowlands of Central Bohemia. According to the foundational myth described in early chronicles, this is where Forefather Čech settled his people and named the land after himself. At the summit stands the Romanesque Rotunda of Saint George and Saint Adalbert, consecrated in 1126 to commemorate a military victory at the Battle of Chlumec. Originally a bare hill, it was extensively forested in the 19th century through the efforts of local patriots and now features a mix of oak, beech, and pine trees. Říp is designated as a National Cultural Monument and serves as a popular destination for patriotic pilgrimages and hiking trips. Several viewpoints on its slopes offer spectacular vistas of the Bohemian Central Uplands and the fertile river valleys below. A historic refreshment hut, built in 1907 near the rotunda, continues to welcome visitors with its famous inscription: 'What Mecca is to the Muslim, Říp is to the Czech.'
