Rabí Castle (Czech Republic)

Weather…

Rabí Castle is the largest castle ruin in Bohemia, serving as a monumental example of medieval fortification architecture. Located on a limestone hill overlooking the Otava River, the complex was founded in the early 13th century and reached its zenith under the Lords of Riesenberg. Its defensive system was extraordinary for its time, featuring massive concentric walls stretching nearly three kilometers in total length and advanced bastion designs. Historically, Rabí is best known for the Hussite siege of 1421, during which the famous military leader Jan Žižka lost his second eye, rendering him completely blind. Following the Thirty Years' War, the fortress's strategic importance declined, and by the 18th century, it was largely abandoned and used as a quarry by locals. Today, the ruins are a significant cultural monument, where visitors can explore the towering keep, extensive cellars, and vast courtyards, offering insights into Gothic military engineering and regional history.
