Klatovy, a royal town in West Bohemia, is often called the 'Gateway to the Šumava Mountains.' Its landmark is the Black Tower, which has an impressive view over the town and the surrounding landscape. Right next to it is the Jesuit Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary and St. Ignatius, beneath which lie the famous catacombs. In these crypts, the bodies of Jesuits and nobles were naturally mummified by a sophisticated ventilation system. Another unique feature of the town is the Baroque pharmacy 'At the White Unicorn,' whose original interior is fully preserved and now serves as a museum. Klatovy is also known for the cultivation of carnations, a tradition dating back to the 19th century.
