Rabí Castle Ruins (Czech Republic)

Weather…

The Rabí castle ruins in Southern Bohemia represent the largest castle complex by area in the Czech Republic and serve as an impressive monument to medieval fortification art. Built in the 13th century on a limestone hill, it was expanded over centuries into a massive fortress with a sophisticated defensive system. Rabí gained fame primarily during the Hussite Wars when the leader Jan Žižka besieged the castle twice. During the second siege in 1421, Žižka lost his second eye here, firmly embedding the site into Czech national historiography. The architecture is dominated by the monumental residential tower, the donjon, which once served as the core of the defense. Despite later destruction and its use as a quarry in the 18th century, the ruins still convey the former power and grandeur of the Bohemian nobility. Today, visitors can explore the extensive cellars, the chapel, and the massive ramparts that testify to the castle's strategic importance in the border region.
