Orlík Castle was founded in the 13th century as a royal Gothic fortress on a 60-meter high cliff above the Vltava River. The construction of the Orlík Dam in the 1950s submerged the valley, raising the water level so that the castle now sits right at the water's edge. Its current Romantic appearance is the result of a Neo-Gothic renovation in the 19th century. Inside, visitors can explore the lavish rooms of the Schwarzenberg family, featuring extensive collections of weaponry, medals, and a massive historical library. The surrounding English-style park provides a serene setting for walks among ancient trees. Boat trips from the castle dock offer a unique vantage point to appreciate the fortress's architecture and the surrounding landscape. The local cuisine focuses on South Bohemian staples like freshwater fish and hearty game dishes. Located about 80 km south of Prague, Orlík is easily accessible by car or tour bus. The best time to visit is between May and September, when the boat services are fully operational and the gardens are in bloom.
