Louny, often called the 'Pearl on the Ohře River,' is a historically significant town in northwestern Bohemia. The city experienced its greatest flourish during the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, which is reflected in its impressive architecture. Its outstanding landmark is the Late Gothic Church of St. Nicholas, a masterpiece by architect Benedikt Rejt, who also designed the Vladislav Hall in Prague. Louny was an important center of the Hussite movement during the Hussite Wars and always maintained a strong Protestant spirit. The town walls, featuring the Žatec Gate, are a testament to the once-mighty fortifications. Geographically, Louny lies at the edge of the Bohemian Central Highlands in a region world-famous for growing high-quality hops. Today, the town is a key cultural center of the Ústí nad Labem Region, offering modern sports facilities and a lively town core with numerous cafes and museums alongside its historical treasures.
