Hněvín Castle (Czech Republic)

Weather…

Hněvín Castle stands on a hill overlooking the city of Most and is a major landmark of North Bohemia. The original medieval castle was founded in the 13th century and served for centuries as an impregnable fortress. A unique part of its history is the association with the alchemist Edward Kelley, who was imprisoned here in the 16th century during the reign of Rudolf II. Following the Thirty Years' War, in 1651, the castle was almost completely demolished by order of Emperor Ferdinand III to prevent it from serving as an enemy base. The current Neo-Gothic appearance is the result of a reconstruction initiated by a local castle association at the end of the 19th century. Today, the site houses an astronomical observatory and a restaurant, with its lookout tower providing a sweeping view over the revitalized industrial landscape of the Most region. The castle successfully bridges medieval legends with modern regional history.
