Jirkov is located at the foot of the Ore Mountains, near the city of Chomutov. The town has a long industrial tradition, originally based on ore mining and later on the textile industry. In the second half of the 20th century, large housing estates were built to accommodate workers for the nearby industrial and mining areas. A significant historical landmark is the Červený Hrádek (Rothenhaus) Castle, situated on the outskirts of the town. This castle gained notoriety in 1938 when Lord Runciman negotiated here with Sudeten German leaders, preceding the Munich Agreement. Today, the castle serves as a cultural and educational center. The historic wine cellars (Jirkovské sklepy), carved into the sandstone rocks, are another unique attraction.
