Cheb City Fortifications (Czech Republic)

Weather…

The city fortifications of Cheb represent one of the most complex and layered defensive systems in the Bohemian lands. Situated on the border with the Holy Roman Empire, the city was of immense strategic importance, leading to the construction of massive walls and watchtowers over several centuries. A key component is the Cheb Castle, a unique Staufer-style imperial palace (pfalz) that was fully integrated into the urban defense network. During the 17th century, under imperial rule, Cheb was modernized into a Baroque fortress, featuring extensive bastions and curtain walls designed by prominent military engineers. Although significant portions of the walls were dismantled in the 19th century to accommodate urban growth, impressive sections like the Black Tower and several bastions remain. These fortifications reflect Cheb's long-standing role as a vital commercial and military hub between Bohemia and Germany.
