Agios Georgios Pegeia Church (Cyprus)

Weather…

The archaeological site of Agios Georgios Pegeia is spectacularly located on the west coast of Cyprus, north of Paphos. During the early Christian period, particularly in the 6th century under Emperor Justinian, this location was a significant settlement and an important religious center. Excavations have revealed three large basilicas from this era, adorned with impressive floor mosaics. These mosaics display geometric patterns as well as animal and plant depictions, reflecting the wealth of the community at that time. The site likely served as a port for exporting local grain and as a stopover for pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land. In addition to the basilicas, there are numerous rock-cut tombs in the surrounding cliffs dating back to the Roman period. A small, modern chapel dedicated to Saint George stands near the ruins today and is a popular destination for local pilgrimages. The combination of ancient history, sacred art, and the wild beauty of the coastal landscape makes Agios Georgios one of the most impressive sites on the island.
