Uljanik Shipyard (Croatia)

Weather…

The Uljanik shipyard in Pula is one of the oldest in the world, founded in 1856 as the imperial shipyard for the Austrian Navy. Its name is derived from the olive trees that once grew on the island where the facility is now located. For over a century and a half, it served as the industrial heart of Istria, constructing a vast range of vessels from imperial battleships to modern passenger ferries and specialized ships. The shipyard was renowned for its ability to execute technologically demanding projects, such as giant crude oil tankers and cutting-edge car carriers. During its peak, it employed thousands of workers and significantly shaped the social and economic fabric of the city of Pula. Despite its illustrious past, the shipyard faced severe financial difficulties in the 21st century, leading to prolonged restructuring processes and public protests. Nevertheless, Uljanik remains a symbol of Croatian shipbuilding tradition and the maritime heritage of the northern Adriatic.
