Roč is a significant cultural monument in northern Istria. The fortified town has preserved its medieval structure almost entirely, including city gates and towers from the 15th century. Roč is primarily known as one of the most important centers of Glagolitic literature. The first Croatian printed book, the Missale Romanum Glagolitice, was prepared here in 1483. Within the city walls, visitors find the Church of Saint Anthony with the famous 'Roč Alphabet,' a Glagolitic inscription from the 13th century. The town is also the starting point of the famous 'Glagolitic Alley,' a seven-kilometer road connecting Roč with Hum, lined with monumental stone sculptures that tell the story of this ancient Slavic script. Besides history, Roč has a welcoming atmosphere with small cafes and local konobas serving specialties such as truffles and homemade Biska brandy. The surrounding area is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. The nearby cliffs of Kompanj are world-famous among climbers, and paragliders use the thermals over the Mirna Valley. Roč thus uniquely combines centuries-old heritage with modern active tourism.
