💡 Tips
- Check the HAK (Croatian Automobile Club) webcams before heading to the Pasjak-Starod border to avoid potential traffic jams.
- Pasjak is a great base for exploring the Gorski Kotar region, known as the 'Green Heart of Croatia,' away from coastal heat.
- Take advantage of the Schengen Area: visit nearby Ilirska Bistrica in Slovenia for a quick cross-border lunch or shopping trip.
- Wear sturdy shoes if you plan to walk in the surrounding karst forests, as the terrain is rocky and uneven.
- The area is prone to strong 'bura' winds; even on sunny days, it can feel much cooler than the coastal towns.
🍽 Food
Being near the Gorski Kotar forests, local eateries often serve excellent venison or wild boar goulash.

Pasjak is primarily known as a major border crossing between Croatia and Slovenia, but the village has much more than just transit. Located in the municipality of Matulji, it forms the transition from the continental mountains to the sunny Kvarner Gulf. The region is characterized by dense forests and karst rock formations, creating a pleasantly cool mountain climate. For nature lovers, Pasjak is an under-the-radar destination. Numerous hiking trails start from here, leading into the Učka mountains and toward the Slovenian border. The flora and fauna are particularly diverse here, and the fresh mountain air provides a welcome respite from the summer heat on the coast. The village's architecture is practical, but in the old village centers, traces of the traditional Gorski Kotar building style can still be found. In the vicinity of Pasjak, there are small inns known for their hearty mountain cuisine. Venison dishes, homemade cheese, and mushroom specialties are staples on the menu. Its strategic location allows travelers to reach the famous resorts of Opatija and Rijeka within 20 minutes, while enjoying the absolute silence of the mountains at night.
