Otavice is tucked away in the scenic Petrovo field near Drniš, in the Šibenik hinterland. The village is inextricably linked to the life and work of the world-renowned Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović, who spent his childhood here. The most significant landmark is the Meštrović Family Mausoleum (Church of the Most Holy Redeemer), which stands majestically on a hill overlooking the plain. This white-stone architectural masterpiece blends religious symbolism with Meštrović’s distinctive monumental style. Beyond the mausoleum, visitors can find other buildings designed by Meštrović for his community, including the former school and his family home. The landscape around Otavice is defined by the vast open plain, the Čikola River, and the surrounding Svilaja and Promina mountain ranges. The region provides excellent opportunities for hiking and experiencing authentic rural life in the Dalmatian Zagora. The peace and spiritual power of the site make Otavice a unique destination for cultural travelers. While in the area, a visit to nearby Drniš is recommended to taste the famous Drniški pršut, one of Croatia’s finest cured hams. Access is straightforward via the state road connecting Šibenik and Knin.
