The Tvrđa of Osijek is the best-preserved and largest ensemble of Baroque military architecture in Croatia. Construction of the fortress began in 1712 under the Habsburg Monarchy following the withdrawal of the Ottomans from the right bank of the Drava River. The design followed the most advanced principles of fortification science of the time, featuring a star-shaped layout and massive earthworks. Inside the complex, a self-sufficient military town developed, complete with barracks, the General's Command headquarters, and the prominent Holy Trinity Square. The architecture is heavily influenced by the Viennese Baroque school, which is particularly evident in the facades of the residential buildings and churches. Today, Tvrđa serves as the cultural and administrative heart of Osijek, housing numerous museums, galleries, and university departments. The historical significance of the site in securing the Pannonian Plain makes it one of the most important cultural monuments in the Slavonia region.
