Martinovo Selo is situated in the municipality of Jelenje, in the lush hinterland of Rijeka, right on the upper course of the Rječina River. The heart of the village is 'Gašparov mlin', the only still functional watermill in the entire Kvarner region. This 17th-century mill is a living monument of folk architecture and craft tradition, where flour is still ground today in the traditional way between heavy millstones. The village is surrounded by an impressive natural landscape shaped by mountains and the clear, cold waters of the Rječina. A well-maintained hiking trail runs along the river, connecting the villages of the Grobnik field with the source of the Rječina. This region is particularly popular with Rijeka locals as a recreation area, offering cool air and peace away from the city. In Martinovo Selo, visitors can experience authentic village life in the Kvarner hinterland. Local festivals often celebrate the milling tradition, offering homemade bread and cakes made from freshly ground flour. The area is also known for its beekeeping and forest honey production. It is a convenient spot for family outings, riverside picnics, and for anyone interested in traditional rural lifestyles and the history of technology.
