Bakarac is hidden at the eastern end of the deep-cut Bakar Bay, not far from the port city of Rijeka. The village's trademark is the 'Tunere', distinctive, slanted wooden ladders protruding high over the water. These were formerly used by fishermen to spot tuna schools swimming into the bay. Today, they are restored monuments of the local fishing tradition. The architecture of Bakarac consists of dense rows of stone houses set along the narrow coastal road. The village enjoys a special microclimate as it is often hit by the strong Bora wind, which keeps the water in the bay crystal clear. Nearby are the 'Bakarske prezidi', ancient stone terraces where grapes for the famous sparkling wine 'Bakarska vodica' were once grown. Local beaches are mostly small pebble sections or concrete sunbathing areas, very popular with locals. The Church of Saints Peter and Paul is the cultural hub of Bakarac. In local restaurants, you can enjoy fresh fish and seafood, often prepared according to traditional Kvarner region recipes. Access is easy via the Jadranska Magistrala coastal road. Bakarac gives a quiet alternative to bustling Rijeka and is a convenient stop for travelers interested in maritime history and authentic fishing villages. The bay is also a popular area for sailors as it provides excellent shelter from open Adriatic waves.
