Lokrum Island (Croatia)

Weather…

The island of Lokrum lies just 600 meters southeast of Dubrovnik's Old Town and is a significant nature reserve. Its history is documented as far back as 1023, when Benedictine monks established an abbey and monastery on the island. Lokrum is almost entirely covered in dense Mediterranean vegetation, including holm oaks, pines, and cypress trees. A turning point in its history occurred in 1859, when Archduke Maximilian Ferdinand of Habsburg purchased the island and created a botanical garden along with a summer residence. Today, the botanical garden features exotic plants from Australia and South America. A unique geographical feature is the 'Mrtvo More' (Dead Sea), a small salt lake located in the island's interior that is connected to the open sea. Protected since 1963, Lokrum is also famous for its free-roaming peacocks.
