Dubrovnik Cathedral (Croatia)

Weather…

The Dubrovnik Cathedral, officially the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, is a masterpiece of Roman Baroque architecture and the spiritual heart of the city. The present structure was built between 1671 and 1713 based on designs by Andrea Buffalini, replacing the original Romanesque cathedral that was destroyed in the devastating earthquake of 1667. Local legend maintains that King Richard the Lionheart of England funded the original cathedral's construction as a votive offering after being saved from a shipwreck nearby. The magnificent facade and its iconic dome blend seamlessly into the historic Old Town ensemble. Inside, the cathedral houses the renowned reliquary of St. Blaise, the patron saint of Dubrovnik. The Cathedral Treasury is regarded as one of the most valuable in the Adriatic, containing over 130 gold and silver reliquaries. Artistically significant is the main altar painting, an 'Assumption of the Virgin' triptych from the workshop of Titian. The cathedral remains an active place of worship and a central venue for the annual festivities honoring St. Blaise.
