Jasenice is located at one of the most dramatic spots on the Croatian coast, where the mighty Velebit mountain range meets the Adriatic Sea. The municipality includes several settlements, including Maslenica and Rovanjska. The place is best known for the two Maslenica bridges, which represent a vital transport link between northern and southern Croatia. The area is characterized by barren karst landscapes, deep blue water, and the steep rock walls of the mountains. Outdoor enthusiasts will find a true paradise here. Paklenica National Park is only a few kilometers away and features world-renowned climbing opportunities and hiking trails. Another highlight is 'Tulove grede', an impressive rock formation in Velebit that also served as a filming location for the Winnetou movies. The nearby Zrmanja canyon is a popular destination for rafting and kayak tours. In coastal settlements like Rovanjska, you can swim in clean water and sample the local specialty, prosciutto (Pršut), which gains its unique flavor from the Bura winds of Velebit. Jasenice gives a first-rate combination of mountain adventure and maritime flair, good for travelers who want to experience the rugged and untouched beauty of Dalmatia.

Explore Jasenice and Maslenica on foot. The path leads from the cozy harbor to the historical St. Jerome Church and on to the iconic red Maslenica Bridge. Enjoy the morning with panoramic views of the Novigrad Channel, spend relaxing hours at the pebble beach, and finish the day with local Dalmatian specialties right by the water.
Start the day inside the cafe, watching the rain clouds roll over the Novigrad Sea. St. Jerome Church provides a dry sanctuary for exploration. The walk to the Maslenica Bridge is windy when wet, offering a dramatic view of the steel structure against the grey sky. Swap the beach break for a long, warming lunch in a traditional tavern before a brisk walk along the harbor's sheltered spots.
Crisp winter air greets us during morning coffee. The church interior is chilly but serene. On the bridge, be prepared for the strong Bura wind from the mountains. Enjoy the low winter sun at the beach for views only, then retreat to a heated tavern for a hearty meal. The harbor walk concludes just as the sun sets early, casting long shadows over the Adriatic by 4:30 PM.
This bike tour connects the coastal landscape of Maslenica with the mysterious Modrič Cave. Cycle along the Adriatic highway (with caution!) or use side roads in Rovanjska. The route offers spectacular views of the sea and the imposing rocks of the Velebit mountains in the background, with plenty of time for a cave tour and a harbor lunch.
Cycling in the rain requires focus, but Modrič Cave is the ultimate dry reward. Start at the church and cross the bridge with caution due to gusts. Along the Rovanjska coast, sea spray and rain create a wild atmosphere. Spend 100 dry minutes inside the cave before a fortifying lunch and a wet ride back to the starting point.
Winter cycling here is all about managing the wind. From the church to the bridge, feel the biting mountain air. The ride to Rovanjska is flat, but side winds from the Bura can be tricky. The cave’s constant 15°C feels remarkably warm in winter. After a hot lunch, pedal quickly back to beat the rapidly dropping dusk temperatures.
This car route offers the ultimate experience between the sea and the mountains. After visiting coastal highlights like the Maslenica Bridge and Modrič Cave, the drive leads up into Velebit to Tulove Grede. The striking rock formations are not only a natural wonder but also a cult site for movie fans. The road there (Majstorska cesta) is an adventure in itself with unparalleled views.
The car provides the perfect shelter from the rain today. View the bridge and church comfortably before heading underground at Modrič. Driving up to Tulove Grede on the gravel road requires care when wet as it can get muddy. Keep the Winnetou photo stop brief before settling in for a cozy dinner in Rovanjska.
The car is your warm base between winter stops. The Maslenica Bridge is often closed to high vehicles due to Bura, but cars usually pass. Tulove Grede may be snow-capped, turning the limestone into a winter wonderland. After the Winnetou stop, enjoy a heavy meal in Rovanjska while the winter winds howl outside.
