Tulove Grede (Croatia)

Weather…

Tulove Grede is a spectacular karst formation in the southern part of the Velebit mountain range, renowned for its bizarre rock towers and white limestone pillars. The formation reaches an elevation of approximately 1120 meters and sits directly above the historic Majstorska cesta (Master's Road) passing through the Alan mountain pass. This road, completed in 1832, is considered a masterpiece of 19th-century engineering, providing a vital connection between the Lika region and Dalmatia. Geologically, Tulove Grede is a textbook example of intense karstification, shaped by millions of years of erosion and tectonic shifts. The site gained international fame in the 1960s as a primary filming location for the Winnetou movie series, where the jagged cliffs served as the backdrop for the fictional Nugget Tsil. During the Croatian War of Independence in the 1990s, the area was a key strategic point and saw heavy fighting along the front line. Today, it is part of the Velebit Nature Park and attracts hikers and cinema enthusiasts from all over the world.
