Mljet Island (Croatia)

Weather…

Mljet is the southernmost of the major Croatian islands and home to the oldest national park on the Adriatic, established in 1960. The national park covers the western part of the island and is primarily famous for its two saltwater lakes, the Great Lake and the Small Lake. In the middle of the Great Lake lies the islet of St. Mary, featuring a Benedictine monastery dating back to the 12th century. Over 70% of the island is forested, earning it the nickname the green island. Historically, Mljet was mentioned by the ancient Greeks as Melita and features prominently in the legend of Odysseus, who supposedly stayed here for seven years. The pristine nature and rich marine biodiversity make the island a critical research area for marine biologists. Mljet is also renowned for its traditional fishing and the production of high-quality olive oil and wine. The blend of ancient history and dense Mediterranean vegetation gives the island a unique status within Croatia's natural heritage.
