Barban is located in the eastern part of the Istrian peninsula, on a hill overlooking the Raša river valley. The settlement is rich in cultural and historical monuments from the period of Venetian rule. The most striking event in Barban is 'Trka na prstenac' (Race for the Ring), an equestrian knightly game first mentioned in 1696 and revived annually every August since 1976. Riders in traditional costumes attempt to hit a small ring with a lance while galloping. The townscape is defined by the Baroque Church of Saint Nicholas and the adjacent defensive tower. The architecture reflects the transition from Gothic to Baroque, featuring elegant palaces of the former ruling Loredan family. Barban is also an excellent destination for nature lovers and adventurers. Nearby is Glavani Park, one of Croatia's largest climbing and adventure parks. The region around Barban is known for its excellent gastronomy. Visitors can enjoy Istrian specialties such as truffles, homemade pasta (Fuži), and game dishes in local agritourism establishments. The area is also handy for horseback riding and cycling on numerous marked trails that lead through the scenic Istrian landscape. Barban has an excellent blend of tradition, history, and modern active vacationing.
