Mbeli Bai Observation Point (Congo - Brazzaville)

Weather…

Mbeli Bai is a natural swamp clearing of approximately 13 hectares located in the southwest of the Odzala-Kokoua National Park in the Republic of the Congo. Since 1995, the site has been intensively monitored by the Wildlife Conservation Society to study the behavior of western lowland gorillas and other wildlife in their pristine habitat. The clearing is rich in mineral-laden aquatic vegetation that regularly attracts forest elephants, sitatungas, and forest buffaloes. Researchers utilize a fixed observation platform to conduct long-term behavioral studies without directly disturbing the animals. It is one of the few locations globally where gorillas have been documented wading through deep water and using tools to test water depth. Data from Mbeli Bai is crucial for understanding the social dynamics and reproductive rates of these endangered primates. Geographically, the bai is situated within the dense tropical rainforest of the Congo Basin and is accessible only via river routes and trekking paths.
