Lobéké National Park

Lobéké National Park forms a critical part of the Sangha Trinational, a UNESCO World Heritage site shared with the Central African Republic and the Republic of Congo. The park consists almost entirely of dense, primary equatorial rainforest. It is most famous for its natural forest clearings, known as bais, which attract a vast array of wildlife searching for mineral-rich soils and water. Wildlife viewing here requires patience but is highly rewarding. Visitors can observe western lowland gorillas, African forest elephants, chimpanzees, and bongo antelopes from purpose-built wooden observation towers overlooking the bais. The area is also a haven for birdwatchers, hosting over 300 bird species including the African grey parrot. Reaching Lobéké requires a multi-day journey from Yaoundé via Bertoua and Yokadouma, demanding a sturdy 4x4 vehicle. Facilities are extremely basic, and visitors must camp or stay in simple forest structures. The best time to visit is during the dry months between December and February, when animals congregate around the remaining water sources.
