Dzanga Bai (Central African Republic)

Weather…

Dzanga Bai is a world-renowned mineral-rich clearing located within the Dzanga-Ndoki National Park in the southwestern corner of the Central African Republic. Often referred to as the 'Village of Elephants,' this sandy clearing spans approximately 250 by 500 meters and is traversed by the mineral-rich Dzanga stream. Daily, dozens or even hundreds of forest elephants (Loxodonta cyclotis) gather here to extract essential salts and minerals from the mud. In addition to elephants, the bai attracts rare species such as bongo antelopes, forest buffalo, and giant forest hogs. An observation platform at the edge of the clearing allows researchers and visitors to study the complex social behaviors of these animals without disturbance. Dzanga Bai is a centerpiece of the Sangha Trinational UNESCO World Heritage site, which borders Cameroon and Congo. It remains one of the last great wilderness areas in Central Africa, providing a critical sanctuary for the preservation of the Congo Basin's unique biodiversity.
