Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park

Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park is the crown jewel of Congo's conservation efforts, representing a pristine block of lowland rainforest that has never suffered the impact of logging. This immense wilderness is renowned for its 'naïve' wildlife, animals that have had so little human contact they show immense curiosity rather than fear. It is a vital sanctuary for the endangered western lowland gorilla, as well as chimpanzees and large populations of forest elephants. The most famous feature of the park is the Mbeli Bai, a large, marshy clearing where researchers and visitors can observe elusive forest creatures gathering to feed on mineral-rich aquatic plants. Sitting quietly on a viewing platform here features unparalleled opportunities to see gorilla families and sitatunga antelopes in their natural habitat. The dense canopy above is alive with colorful birds and agile monkeys, creating a continuous symphony of jungle sounds. Traveling to Nouabalé-Ndoki is an expedition in itself, often involving a domestic flight to Ouésso followed by a long boat journey up the Sangha River and off-road driving. Due to its remote nature, it requires robust logistics and a sense of adventure. The dry season, from December to March, is generally considered the most favorable time to visit for better wildlife visibility.
