Dzanga-Sangha Reserve (Central African Republic)

Weather…

The Dzanga-Sangha Reserve protects one of Africa's last pristine primary forests. Visitors come primarily to participate in guided treks to see western lowland gorillas and to learn about the traditional lifestyle of the indigenous BaAka people. A highlight is the Dzanga Bai, a large forest clearing where dozens of forest elephants gather daily to consume mineral-rich soil. The dense habitat is also home to elusive bongo antelopes and a rich variety of birdlife. Access is typically via the international airport in Bangui, followed by a charter flight or a multi-day journey in a 4x4 vehicle through remote terrain. Tourism infrastructure is basic, though specialized eco-lodges are available. Located in the Congo Basin, the area has a humid tropical climate. The most favorable time for wildlife observation and travel is the drier season from December to March, when the unpaved forest roads are more navigable.
