Altun Mountains (China)

Weather…

The Altun Mountains, or Altyn-Tagh, stretch across Northwest China along the borders of Xinjiang, Qinghai, and Gansu provinces. This range forms the northern rampart of the Tibetan Plateau, effectively separating it from the arid Tarim Basin to the north. The mountains feature several peaks over 6,000 meters, with Sulamutag standing as the highest at approximately 6,295 meters. Geologically, the range is defined by the Altyn-Tagh Fault, one of the world's longest active strike-slip faults, which accommodates the tectonic deformation caused by the India-Eurasia collision. The environment is characterized by a harsh, cold desert climate with minimal precipitation. The Altun Shan Nature Reserve, covering 45,000 square kilometers within the range, is one of China's most remote and pristine wilderness areas. It is famously known as a sanctuary for the 'Big Three' plateau herbivores: the wild yak, the Tibetan wild ass (kiang), and the Tibetan antelope (chiru).

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Reaching this severely arid mountain range generally involves embarking from major desert oasis cities and undertaking incredibly extensive overland journeys across harsh terrain in highly specialized off-road vehicles.
📅
Best season
The transitional seasons of late spring and early autumn are typically unequivocally best, entirely avoiding the freezing winter temperatures of the high altitudes and the intensely severe summer heat of the adjacent basin.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The topography is intensely rugged and mostly entirely barren, boldly featuring steep rocky gorges, high-altitude desert plateaus, and virtually absolutely no established infrastructure for casual hikers.
🎒
What to bring
Survival in this extremely harsh environment critically requires extreme temperature-rated clothing, highly specialized desert and alpine trekking equipment, and carrying entirely self-sufficient water and food supplies.
🅿️
Parking
Standard vehicular access is utterly impossible; essential transport logistics are entirely handled by highly specialized expedition teams who set up temporary base camps vastly far from any formally paved roads.
⚠️
Safety
Extreme geographical isolation, severe high altitude, and drastic weather fluctuations present constant immense dangers; independent travel is vehemently discouraged, and comprehensive expedition planning is absolutely strictly necessary.
⏱️
Time needed
Due to the immense distances and the supremely challenging nature of the harsh landscape, bold expeditions successfully traversing the southern edge of the basin generally require a minimum of ten to fourteen long days.
