K2, also known as Mount Godwin-Austen or Chhogori, is the second-highest mountain in the world at 8,611 meters above sea level. Situated on the border between Pakistan and China in the Karakoram range, it is widely considered the most difficult and dangerous peak to climb among the fourteen eight-thousanders, earning it the nickname 'the Savage Mountain.' The first successful ascent was achieved on July 31, 1954, by an Italian expedition led by Ardito Desio, with Achille Compagnoni and Lino Lacedelli reaching the summit. Geologically, K2 consists primarily of various types of gneiss and marble formed during the intense tectonic collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates. The weather patterns on K2 are notoriously unpredictable and storm-prone, making even standard routes like the Abruzzi Spur extremely high-risk for climbers. Unlike Mount Everest, K2 was not successfully summited during the winter until January 2021, highlighting its extreme technical difficulty and harsh environment. It remains a pinnacle of mountaineering challenges, attracting elite alpinists from across the globe.

Getting there

Reaching the base camp is a massive logistical undertaking, usually starting with a flight to Skardu (Pakistan) followed by days of trekking. The Chinese side involves an extremely remote expedition.

Expeditions and major treks almost exclusively occur during a very narrow window in July and August. Outside of summer, extreme cold and violent storms make the region impassable.
