Quintero-Puchuncaví Industrial Complex (Chile)

Weather…

The Quintero-Puchuncaví Industrial Complex in the Valparaíso Region is one of Chile's largest and most controversial industrial hubs. Its development began in the 1960s with the opening of the Ventanas copper smelter by the state company ENAMI. Over the years, numerous other companies established themselves there, including thermoelectric power plants, oil terminals, and chemical processing facilities. This concentration of heavy industry has made the area a key node for the Chilean energy and mining sectors. The complex includes vital liquefied natural gas (LNG) and coal terminals that are essential for national energy security. However, the facility has faced decades of criticism due to severe environmental pollution and its impact on the health of the local population. In recent years, the Chilean government has initiated plans to phase out some of the most polluting units, such as Codelco's copper smelter. The complex remains a symbol of the tension between industrial progress and ecological sustainability.
