Algarrobo
Algarrobo is one of the most traditional and popular coastal resorts in the Valparaíso Region, often referred to as the nautical capital of Chile. Its bays face northward, which protects the waters from the strong southern winds, resulting in calmer seas compared to other coastal towns. This sheltered environment makes it a prime location for water sports, particularly sailing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. The town has a bustling, family-friendly atmosphere with a mix of modern apartments and older summer homes. The town gained international fame due to the San Alfonso del Mar resort, which is home to one of the largest swimming pools in the world, filled with filtered seawater. Beyond the massive pool, Algarrobo gives several natural attractions, such as the Pájaros Niños Islet. This protected nature sanctuary is connected to the mainland by a breakwater and is a nesting site for Humboldt penguins and various pelicans. Seafood restaurants line the coastal avenue, offering fresh fish and the traditional Chilean summer drink, mote con huesillo. Algarrobo is very accessible from Santiago, located about 120 kilometers away via Route 68, taking roughly an hour and a half by car. The high season runs from December to March when the town is filled with vacationing families. During the winter, the population drops significantly, but the pine forests and coastal walks remain pleasant for those seeking a quiet coastal retreat.
