Orongo Village (Chile)

Weather…

Orongo is a ceremonial stone village on Easter Island (Rapa Nui), perched on a narrow ridge between the Rano Kau crater and a 300-meter vertical cliff. The village consists of approximately 53 low, elliptical stone houses built from thin basalt slabs. Orongo was the center of the Birdman cult (Tangata Manu), which rose to prominence in the 18th and 19th centuries following the decline of the Moai-building era. Each year, representatives from various clans competed in a perilous race to retrieve the first egg of the sooty tern from the nearby islet of Moto Nui. The victor was named the Birdman of the year, securing political dominance and resource control for his clan for the following season. The site is exceptionally rich in petroglyphs depicting the Birdman and the deity Makemake. Due to its exposed location, Orongo faces significant threats from coastal erosion, necessitating ongoing preservation efforts. Today, the village is a key part of the Rapa Nui National Park and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The dramatic setting between the crater lake and the open ocean makes Orongo one of the most visually memorable locations on the island.
