Pichidangui
Pichidangui is a tranquil coastal destination located just over the border in the Coquimbo Region, though easily reachable from central Chile. Its most distinctive geographical feature is a beautiful 6-kilometer long horseshoe-shaped bay, which creates calm, sheltered waters. This natural protection makes the beach exceptionally safe for swimming, drawing families seeking a relaxed environment away from heavier surf. The town itself retains an appealing, small-scale village feel, largely avoiding massive resort developments. The bay is a renowned hotspot for windsurfing and kitesurfing, thanks to consistent afternoon winds that cross the water. Another notable attraction is the Santa Teresa Church, uniquely built directly on a coastal rock outcropping. For nature enthusiasts, hiking up the nearby Cerro Santa Inés gives a rewarding challenge. This coastal mountain contains an isolated remnant patch of Valdivian temperate rainforest, sustained by coastal fog. The culinary scene centers around the artisanal fishing cove, supplying fresh seafood daily. Pichidangui sits directly alongside Route 5 North, roughly 250 kilometers from Santiago, translating to a drive of about three hours. Summer from December to February is the peak season, but the mild coastal climate makes it a pleasant stopover year-round. Autumn and spring are fantastic for those wanting to explore the Cerro Santa Inés hike when the trails are quiet and the fog forest is bustling.
