Rano Raraku (Chile)

Weather…

Rano Raraku is an extinct volcano on Easter Island (Rapa Nui), world-renowned as the birthplace of the monumental Moai statues. Nearly 95% of the more than 900 statues on the island were carved from the soft tuff stone of this crater's slope. The site functioned as a gigantic quarry where the Rapa Nui people, over centuries, chiseled their ancestral figures from the rock using stone tools called toki. Today, Rano Raraku presents a surreal scene: over 300 unfinished or abandoned Moai stand or lie in various stages of completion on the hillsides and inside the crater. Some statues remain firmly attached to the bedrock, providing valuable insights into ancient manufacturing techniques. The crater itself houses a freshwater lake surrounded by reeds, which was an important resource for the island's inhabitants. Discovering this site is crucial for understanding the cultural peak and subsequent decline of the Rapa Nui civilization. The volcano is part of the Rapa Nui National Park and ranks among the most fascinating archaeological destinations in the world.
