The Lakes of Ounianga present a spectacular hydrological wonder in northeastern Chad, set in one of the most hyper-arid environments on Earth. The system comprises 18 lakes divided into two main clusters: Ounianga Kébir and Ounianga Sérir. They are sustained by an underground fossil groundwater aquifer that flows to the surface. Remarkably, despite the extreme evaporation rates typical of the Sahara, the lakes do not dry out, partially because thick mats of floating reeds and ferns reduce surface evaporation on several lakes. The water colors vary dramatically from deep blue and green to reddish hues, dictated by varying algae and salinity levels. Reaching this remote World Heritage site demands a rigorous, multi-day off-road desert expedition departing from N'Djamena. Visitors must be completely self-sufficient and prepared for wilderness camping, as there is zero tourist infrastructure in the area. The dramatic landscape is framed by sweeping sand dunes and striking sandstone ridges. The optimal time for an expedition is during the cooler months from November to February, avoiding the severe summer heat of the Sahara.
