Toros-Menalla Site (Chad)

Weather…

Toros-Menalla is one of the world's most significant paleoanthropological sites, located deep within the Djurab Desert in northern Chad. It gained global prominence in 2001 with the discovery of the 'Toumaï' fossil (Sahelanthropus tchadensis), which, dated at approximately 7 million years old, is considered one of the oldest known members of the human lineage. This discovery fundamentally altered scientific debates regarding the timing and geographic location of the split between human and chimpanzee ancestors. The site comprises vast sedimentary exposures revealed by wind erosion, featuring an incredible density of Miocene-era fossils. At the time of deposition, Toros-Menalla was a diverse environment of forests and wetlands on the shores of a massive prehistoric Lake Mega-Chad. The extreme conditions of the Sahara make excavations here a significant technical and logistical feat. The findings at Toros-Menalla have firmly placed Chad at the center of global research into the earliest origins of humanity.
