Water temperature…
Visitors travel to Ounianga Kébir to witness Lake Yoa, a 3.5 square kilometer body of highly saline water in the middle of the hyper-arid Sahara Desert. The lake is fed by a fossil groundwater aquifer and is surrounded by sandstone cliffs and palm groves, creating a striking contrast against the dunes. The region provides an extreme natural environment where temperatures frequently exceed 40 degrees Celsius. Local life revolves around date palm cultivation and salt extraction from the lake shores. Due to the high salinity, only specialized microorganisms and algae survive in the water, giving it a unique color. Reaching Ounianga Kébir requires a multi-day 4x4 expedition from N'Djamena or Faya-Largeau, often accompanied by local guides and military escorts for safety. The well-suited time to visit is between November and February, when the desert heat is more manageable.
