Bikku Bitti (Chad)

Weather…

Bikku Bitti, standing at 2,267 meters, is the highest mountain in Libya, located on the northern spurs of the Tibesti Mountains right on the border with Chad. Although the summit technically lies within Libyan territory, it is geologically inseparable from the Chadian portion of the Tibesti massif. The region is among the most inaccessible and least explored areas on Earth, characterized by jagged rock formations and deep, arid valleys. The mountain consists of an ancient Precambrian core overlain by more recent volcanic layers. Due to its extreme isolation and the political complexities of the border zone, Bikku Bitti is very rarely visited by mountaineers or researchers. Climatic conditions are harsh, featuring intense daytime heat and freezing night temperatures in winter, which restricts vegetation to a bare minimum. Nevertheless, the mountain serves as a vital navigational landmark for the nomadic tribes of the central Sahara and stands as a symbol of the region's rugged and untamed majesty.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Reaching this remote peak typically involves an extensive 4x4 off-road expedition across the Sahara. A common starting point is deep within northern Chad, requiring expert desert navigation.
📅
Best season
The cooler winter months from December to February are generally the only viable time for a visit. Summer temperatures in this arid region are lethally hot and entirely unsuitable for expeditions.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The landscape is extremely rugged, featuring vast stretches of shifting sand dunes leading to steep, rocky inclines. Ascent requires dealing with loose scree, sharp volcanic rocks, and completely pathless wilderness.
🎒
What to bring
High-level desert expedition gear, comprehensive survival equipment, and extremely robust hiking boots are absolutely mandatory. Enormous reserves of water, specialized sun protection, and satellite communication are vital.
🅿️
Parking
Vehicles must be left at a safely established, temporary desert base camp carefully chosen by expedition leaders. There is no infrastructure, so the nearest substantial town is hundreds of kilometers away.
⚠️
Safety
Isolation, extreme heat, and absolute lack of water present life-threatening hazards to any visitor. Cross-border tensions and the total absence of rescue services require meticulous planning and experienced guides.
⏱️
Time needed
An entire expedition usually takes several weeks from the nearest civilization just to reach the base. The actual ascent and return from the immediate mountain area might span three to five intense days.
