Chari River

The Chari is the most significant river in Chad and the primary supply system for Lake Chad. With a length of approximately 1,400 kilometers, it originates in the highlands of the Central African Republic and flows in a northwestern direction, passing the Chadian capital, N'Djamena. The river forms the lifeline for agriculture and fishing in a region that would otherwise be marked by extreme drought. Along with its most important tributary, the Logone, the Chari transports millions of cubic meters of sediment and water annually into the lake's endorheic basin. Historically, the river was a central trade route and marked important political boundaries during the colonial period. Seasonal flooding of the Chari is crucial for the fertility of the adjacent polders and floodplains. In Chadian culture, the river is often sung about as a symbol of constancy and fertility. Today, sedimentation and reduced rainfall threaten the river's navigability, which has far-reaching consequences for regional trade. Numerous infrastructure projects, including bridges in N'Djamena, underscore its importance for modern mobility in the country.
