Sultanate of Senoussi (Central African Republic)

Weather…

The Sultanate of Senoussi, also known as Dar al-Kuti, was a significant political entity in the northern region of the modern-day Central African Republic during the late 19th century. Under the leadership of Mohamed al-Senoussi, who reigned from 1890 to 1911, the capital city of N'Délé flourished as a major trade hub for ivory and slaves. The sultanate navigated a complex relationship with French colonial expansion, characterized by periods of strategic cooperation and sudden military confrontations. Geographically, the state dominated the expansive savanna landscapes of the Gribingui basin, acting as a crucial corridor towards the Lake Chad region. The era of the independent sultanate concluded in 1911 following the death of Mohamed al-Senoussi during an encounter with French military forces, leading to the direct integration of the area into French Equatorial Africa. Today, the ruins of the fortified settlement at N'Délé serve as a poignant reminder of the sultanate's former power and its role in the pre-colonial history of the region.
