Port of Porto Novo (Cape Verde)

Weather…

The Port of Porto Novo is the indispensable lifeline for Santo Antão Island, providing the only maritime connection to neighboring São Vicente. Since Santo Antão lacks a functional airport, all passenger and cargo traffic is handled through this port. Originally built in 1962, it has been expanded several times over the following decades to meet increasing traffic demands. A significant modernization project in 2013 improved the quay facilities and created safer conditions for the daily ferry services between Porto Novo and Mindelo. The port is critical for the export of agricultural products for which Santo Antão is famous throughout the archipelago, including coffee and sugarcane products. Its infrastructure also includes areas for local fishing and facilities for fuel storage. Despite its exposed location on the southern coast, the harbor is protected from the Atlantic swell by massive breakwaters. The continuous development of the port is a key factor in the economic growth and tourism potential of the mountainous island.
