Porto Novo is the economic hub and the primary port city of Santo Antão Island, located on its southeastern coast. Since the opening of its modern harbor in 1962, the city has functioned as the main gateway to the island, handling nearly all passenger and cargo traffic from neighboring São Vicente. The city is situated in a semi-arid climatic zone, providing a stark contrast to the lush, green valleys found in the northern part of the island. Porto Novo serves as the administrative seat of the municipality of the same name, which is the largest by area on the island. The urban landscape features a spacious waterfront promenade, modern government buildings, and expanding residential districts. Economically, the city thrives on trade, logistics, and the processing of agricultural goods from the highlands. As a central transportation node, it is the starting point for the spectacular mountain road that climbs through the Cova crater toward the north. In recent decades, Porto Novo has seen significant population growth due to migration from rural areas.
