💡 Tips

  • The climate is often extremely hot. Run your errands in the early morning and seek shade at midday.
  • The Logone River is the heart of the region, but avoid swimming due to currents and possible waterborne diseases.
  • Use the so-called 'Bénin-Taxis' (motorcycles), which are the primary mode of transport here. Helmets are rare, so ride with caution.

Yagoua sits in Cameroon's far north-east on the Logone River at the Chadian border and is the capital of Mayo-Danay Department in the Far North Region. With around 80 000 inhabitants, it is one of Central Africa's most important rice-producing centres: the SEMRY rice paddies supply a large share of Cameroonian rice and feed markets in N'Djamena, Maroua and Garoua. The population is predominantly Massa and Toupouri, known for their traditional dances, round mud-brick huts and initiation rites. Yagoua lies in a floodplain that becomes a vast wetland during the rainy season and, together with the nearby Maga reservoir, hosts large populations of waterbirds. The semi-arid climate with a short, intense rainy season between July and October shapes both rice farming and fishing in the Logone wetlands.
