The Mandara Mountains are a rugged volcanic range in northern Cameroon, forming a natural frontier with Nigeria. The mountains were forged millions of years ago by volcanic forces, leaving behind spectacular rock needles and sheer cliffs that are most prominent in the Kapsiki region. The highest point in the range is Mount Tourou, which reaches an elevation of approximately 1,494 meters. Intense erosion has sculpted the landscape into bizarre geological formations often likened to a lunar environment. The inhabitants of the region, including the Mafa and Kapsiki people, have adapted to the challenging terrain by developing sophisticated stone terracing for agriculture, which are regarded as masterpieces of traditional engineering. Despite the harsh climatic conditions, the range is densely populated and rich in cultural heritage. The Mandara Mountains also serve as a critical watershed for the dry plains of the Chad Basin and host a variety of unique flora adapted to the semi-arid climate.
