Kousseri Fishing Port (Cameroon)

Weather…

The fishing port of Kousseri in the far north of Cameroon is a vital trading hub on the border with Chad. Situated on the banks of the Logone River, directly opposite the Chadian capital N'Djamena, this port is the center for the catch and distribution of freshwater fish from the Logone and the nearby Lake Chad. Hundreds of colorful pirogues land their catch here daily, which is mostly dried, smoked, or sold fresh on-site. The port is not only important for local food security but also generates significant income through cross-border trade. Fishermen use traditional nets and techniques passed down through generations. Despite the challenging climatic conditions in the Sahel region, fishing remains one of the most stable pillars of Kousseri's economy. In recent years, however, receding water levels and environmental changes at Lake Chad have affected productivity. Nevertheless, the port remains a lively location symbolizing the close economic integration between Cameroon and Chad.
