Angkor Centre for Conservation of Biodiversity (Cambodia)

Weather…

The Angkor Centre for Conservation of Biodiversity (ACCB) was the first nature conservation and research center established in Cambodia, located at the base of Kbal Spean within Angkor National Park. Founded in 2003, the center is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and captive breeding of endangered native wildlife. It houses a diverse range of animals, including gibbons, langurs, rare tortoises, and various birds of prey, many of which were confiscated from the illegal wildlife trade. A primary goal of the ACCB is the eventual reintroduction of these threatened species into their natural habitats to bolster local populations. In addition to animal care, the center conducts vital environmental education programs for both the local community and international visitors. The project is supported by the Zoological Society for the Conservation of Species and Populations (ZGAP) from Germany. Guided tours offer visitors a deep look into scientific breeding programs and the broader challenges of wildlife protection in Cambodia. The center is an essential destination for those interested in professional, evidence-based conservation efforts in Southeast Asia.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The dry season, spanning from late autumn to early spring, is generally the most comfortable time to visit this rescue center. However, visiting during the greener wet season can also be rewarding, as the surrounding tropical forest feels incredibly lively.
🌅
Best time of day
It is highly recommended to join one of the regularly scheduled daily tours, typically offered in the morning and early afternoon. Morning visits are especially favored because the temperatures are cooler and the recovering animals are usually more active.
📜
Etiquette
Visitors must follow the instructions of the guides and are strictly prohibited from touching the enclosures or interacting directly with the wildlife. Flash photography is generally forbidden to ensure the stressed and recovering animals remain calm.
🎒
What to bring
Wear lightweight, breathable clothing suitable for the humid tropical climate, and ensure you have sturdy walking shoes for the facility's paths. A hat and ample mosquito repellent are essential to keep you comfortable during the educational tour.
🧭
Getting there
The conservation centre is situated a short drive away from the famous temples of Siem Reap, making it an easy half-day excursion. You can typically arrange for a tuk-tuk or a private taxi from the city center to take you directly to the entrance.
🦌
What to expect
Remember that this is a rehabilitation facility, not a traditional zoo, so some enclosures may be partially hidden to provide animals with privacy. Listen closely to the passionate guides, as understanding the rescue stories is just as rewarding as seeing the wildlife.
